Click here to read about what psychotherapy is, the typical duration thereof, and what to expect during the first session.
During the initial stages of therapy, weekly sessions are generally considered the most effective frequency as it provides the necessary consistency for treatment progress. It helps build therapeutic rapport between the client and therapist, allowing for a deeper and more meaningful exploration of the client’s presenting concern(s).
Bi-weekly sessions may be considered for maintenance after substantial progress has been made, but can hinder momentum during the initial stages of therapy.
Monthly sessions are suitable for maintenance for clients who experience an improvement in their mental well-being, usually due to the resolution of their presenting concern(s).
Psychotherapy frequency isn’t a one-size-fits-all as multiple factors play a role, including the client’s presenting concern(s) and their individual needs. This will be discussed with you during the first session.
The purpose of the first session is for your therapist to get to know you, for you to get to know how your therapist works and if you think they’re the right professional for you, and for your therapist to help you establish goals for therapy to assist with tracking progress.
Topics/questions often explored during the initial stages of therapy:
Tell me about yourself.
What brings you to therapy?
What are you hoping to get from attending therapy?
What symptoms are you experiencing?
Tell me about your history (medical, psychiatric, family, social, academic, etc.).
